Since clearing up the floor also requires you to get down (which most people don't like) it will take you more mental energy to start cleaning up and therefore it will take longer until you start.

Never put things on the floor
Never put any objects on the floor which do not belong there. This applies for your home as well as your work place. Objects on the floor immediately give an untidy impression and invite others to follow making the mess bigger.
